The Concept of Competition is a Waste of Time

There are only 2-types of businesses that ever have to worry about competition:

1. Fast food restaurants and chain stores – they are a known commodity and type of business model that can only work in one specific way.

2. Anyone who is selling a product or service based on the traditions of their industry. They sell just like everyone else and never use their unique knowledge and personal talent in that industry.

For everyone else, the concept of competition is a complete waste of time.

The reason?

When you use your knowledge and inherent strengths (talent) to create values that benefit other people, you are unique, you stand out from the crowd.

Sure, there may be other people doing what you do but they cannot offer what you provide. They can never have your unique perspective, knowledge, experience and ability.

The only way they can compete is if you are selling a basic service the way everyone else does, without regard to your knowledge and expertise.

CAUTION: your peers will tell you this idea is crazy. They will say, "You have to fit in."

What they are really saying is you have to be just like me or you might actually become better.

It takes courage to be unique; just like it takes courage to succeed on your own terms.

A recent example of this common sense “talent-in-business magic” comes from the professional organizing industry.

I started working with a new client in that industry recently. She was underperforming and barely keeping her head above water. She was exactly like all the other organizers in her market in the eyes of her clients and prospects.

We started by looking at the factors that made her unique. I interviewed her, pulled the core strengths and “talent” she brought to the table out.

We created a sales message that emphasized that talent and unique knowledge.

She started delivering that message concisely both to herself (in her mind) and to other people.

She started looking for opportunities to continuously help the people she was already working with; continuing to add value to their lives through her unique perspective.

The results were spectacular.

Without launching any marketing initiatives yet, just by changing her perception of what her business is all about, her sales have been stronger in the last 6-weeks than the majority of last year combined.

Why? We stopped competing with the other organizers and started selling a unique talent and personal knowledge.

You see, she really isn’t an “organizer”. She is someone who changes lives by providing personal freedom.

Now she has a compelling story to explain that fact to the people who have reason to care.

In fact, this organizer is now paying referral fees to other organizers for sending business her way. Shocking to those who do not “get” the concept and highly profitable for those who do.

The same kind of result can happen for any business, in any industry no matter how competitive.

Your talent in business is your greatest competitive edge. Use it and thrive in any market.
