Conscious or
Subconscious
There is a magic place in your mind
that allows you to do things you would never believe are possible.
That magic space is called the subconscious mind.
Your subconscious mind is at work whenever you excel.
It can be an artistic endeavor, sports or even business related
activities. In fact, painting, playing music, writing, playing golf
and selling ALL rely on the subconscious mind to perform the work at
hand.
How weird is that?
If you “think” about how to do any of these things consciously you
under perform or cannot do them at all.
However if you set the picture of what you want to accomplish
consciously and then turn it over to the subconscious mind to act,
your performance will be stellar.
Here’s my personal example from Sunday.
I was playing golf. On a par 3, I hit a shot on the green leaving
the ball about 25 feet from the hole. That would be considered a
long putt.
I consciously said to myself, “I’ll roll this up close and tap it in
for a par.”
I stepped up to the ball, emptied my mind of expectation and allowed
my subconscious to go to work.
I hit the ball without even thinking about the outcome. Clunk
the ball dropped into the hole 25 feet away. WOO-HOO!
In fact, the entire day I was putting pretty well by not
thinking about my putting or the outcome of the shots very much at
all.
I have done the same thing when selling.
When I was in the art business I realized something amazing for the
first time. When I thought about “How should I close this deal” I
typically would not be able to get the client to buy.
However, whenever I said, “What does this person need to hear or see
to purchase this work of art” and let go of all expectation, the
piece would sell every time.
Magic? No the subconscious mind, directing the activity at work.
Try this exercise.
The next time you have to write something, for any reason, think
about the result you want to achieve.
Then sit down at your keyboard and don’t think of what to say. Stay
focused on the outcome you want to produce and just let the words
flow. Write down whatever you feel inspired to communicate.
It takes practice, but unleashing your subconscious mind can turn
someone who hates to write into a solid communicator.
On your next sales call, don’t think about how to close the deal.
Instead, before the appointment, just consider what you want to see
happen. Then go in with your active listening ears on, listen to
what the other person has to say and respond with the first thing
that pops into you mind.
I typically experience a 50% or better closing ratio by following
this plan of action.
Allow your conscious mind to set the desired outcome. Then empty
your conscious mind of the how-to-do-it thinking and allow your
powerful subconscious to turn that desire into a great result.
