What is Direct
Selling?
According to top sales thinkers
like Jeffrey Gitomer, people do not like to be sold. But they do
like to buy.
It would be reasonable to assume then that direct selling is the
facilitation of helping people buy things they want that benefit
them in some way.
As we discussed in past Creative Business Strategies this year,
the purpose of
business is to build wealth.
The way wealth is built in a business is to create a value people
want to buy and then offer it to them. This is most easily done with
a winning sales process. (See
Why is Business So Darn
Hard)
In today’s world, Direct Selling is observing where a value you
create is needed. Then all you have to do is find ways to make that
person or group of people aware of the value.
Once you're in front of a potential client, a sale is made by asking
questions that help people think through the process of purchasing.
You can "close the sale" simply by asking “How do you make a
decision like this?” They’ll tell you, you make it easy for them
to use the value you’ve created, and a sale has been made. Author
Sharon Drew Morgen calls this process Buying Facilitation.
Direct Selling is an intentional
instead of passive process. The old school thinking of “Adding
value” is a dated concept that doesn’t really lead to sales.
Unfortunately, it often leads to “I’ll think about it” because you
did not hit the buying nerve. You confused your
prospect with options instead.
Direct Sales starts by attracting:
- Find groups of people who share
your worldview about the product or service you sell.
- Contact them to let them know
you have a something of interest.
- Ask them if they’d like to find
out more and POOF you have attracted a new, qualified and warm
lead into your selling system.
Then remember the words of Jeffrey
Gitomer, "People don’t like to be sold but they DO like to buy."
Take them through the process of
understanding how to purchase from you and then help them easily
facilitate the YES decision to your offer.
Repeat consistently everyday and you have accomplished the
true purpose of
business.
Good luck and good communicating.
